The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, signed the EU budget for 2025 after it was approved by the majority of Members of the European Parliament.
The budget was adopted with 418 votes in favor, 185 against, and 67 abstentions. The total budget for 2025 will amount to €199.4 billion, which is a 6% increase compared to the current year, meaning an additional €10 billion.
The budget will focus on providing more effective support in areas such as healthcare, humanitarian aid, border management and combating climate change.
Over 90% of the EU budget is directed towards projects both within the European Union and outside it, benefiting citizens, regions, farmers, researchers, students, NGOs and businesses.
The EU serves 27 countries with a total population of 450 million people. Despite its scale, the annual EU budget is relatively small, averaging €160-180 billion per year in 2021-2027, which is comparable to Denmark’s budget (with a population of 5.6 million) and 30% smaller than Poland’s budget (with a population of 38 million).
