Spain: at least 340 migrants arrived on the Canary Islands on five boats

The arrival of migrants to the Canary Islands continues: from Sunday to Tuesday, at least 340 people aboard five boats were rescued off the coasts of El Hierro and Tenerife.

On Monday and Tuesday (November 25–26), two boats carrying 85 and 75 people, respectively, arrived on the island of El Hierro, the smallest and westernmost of the Canary Islands.

On Tuesday morning, rescue services launched an operation to locate and assist a third boat spotted from the air 37 kilometers off the island. At of the time of reporting, the search for this vessel was still ongoing.

Additionally, 178 migrants, including six children, were rescued between Sunday and Monday from three separate boats off the coasts of El Hierro and Tenerife.

Since the beginning of 2024, more than 40,000 migrants have arrived irregularly on the Canary Islands, making this year a record-breaking one for such arrivals. This figure surpasses the total recorded for all of 2023, when 39,910 arrivals were reported, according to Spain’s Ministry of the Interior.
