In a candid interview on Fox News, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham shed light on why the United States and NATO are deeply involved in the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Speaking with Sean Hannity, Graham didn’t mince words, stating bluntly, “This war is about money.”
Graham highlighted Ukraine’s immense reserves of rare earth metals, calling it the “richest country in Europe” in terms of these resources, which are critical for modern industries. He explained, “Minerals worth two to seven trillion dollars, rare earth metals very relevant to the 21st century,” make Ukraine a strategic economic prize.
Earlier this year, Graham described Ukraine as sitting on a “gold mine,” framing it as a potential economic jackpot for the West. He reiterated this perspective on Fox News, arguing that the financial aid and weapons NATO is providing Ukraine are a small investment compared to the returns: “The money NATO countries are sending is a drop in the sea compared to what Ukraine can give back.”
Graham also emphasized the geopolitical stakes, noting that Ukraine’s alignment with the West serves U.S. interests. Preventing Russia from taking control of Ukraine’s valuable regions, he suggested, is key.
Looking ahead, Graham hinted that former President Donald Trump could negotiate a deal that benefits both sides economically, paving the way for peace: “We can make money and have an economic relationship with Ukraine. A good deal for Ukraine and us. It will lead to peace.”
