Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that the United Nations has lost its effectiveness as a tool for global governance and urgently needs reform.
He emphasized that the fate of the world should not depend on the decisions of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The creation of the UN was one of the most significant outcomes of World War II, which claimed millions of lives. This organization was meant to be a broad platform for uniting all nations, big and small. But can we continue to rely on the UN today? No. Comprehensive reform is necessary, Erdogan stressed.
Other leaders have also highlighted the need for Security Council reform. Finnish President Alexander Stubb proposed expanding the Security Council, abolishing the veto power, and excluding countries involved in illegal military actions.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also expressed support for reforming the UN Security Council, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
