In Germany, an Olympic champion could be fined 2,500 euros for throwing trash in a neighbor’s bin

Famous German gymnast and Olympic champion Fabian Hambüchen found himself at the center of a scandal after throwing unwanted items—cardboard boxes and old electronics—into a trash bin belonging to a neighboring house in Wetzlar (Hesse).

The neighbor, who noticed Hambüchen’s actions on security cameras, immediately called the police. The police quickly identified the culprit through his car’s license plate number. Upon arriving at the Olympic champion’s neighborhood, the officers found that Hambüchen was no longer there. However, the authorities opened an administrative case and began searching for him.

Fabian Hambüchen himself contacted the police and explained that he had thrown out the trash during a move. Under the laws of Hesse, a fine of 150 to 2,500 euros can be imposed for such an offense. Hambüchen acknowledged that the incident served as an important lesson for him.
