On Saturday, November 30, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. The discussion focused on trade relations between the two countries.
According to the Associated Press, Trudeau described the nearly three-hour meeting as a “great conversation.” However, prior to the meeting, Donald Trump had announced plans to impose significant tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, citing concerns over migration issues and the illegal transportation of fentanyl across the border.
Among those present at the meeting was Mike Waltz, whom Trump plans to appoint as National Security Advisor. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who also spoke with Trump the day before, expressed confidence that a “tariff war” with the United States could be avoided.
After the meeting, Trudeau emphasized that the main goal was to achieve a “win-win” outcome for both countries in trade matters. He also pointed out that Trump was elected on promises to lower the cost of goods, but now he is considering imposing a 25% tariff on products, which would affect items like potatoes from Prince Edward Island.
According to AP, Canada is a key export market for 36 U.S. states, with goods and services worth nearly $2.7 billion crossing the border daily.
