Chocolate rises sharply in Germany before Christmas

In Germany, despite slowing inflation, the cost of chocolate treats is skyrocketing.

The main reason is poor cocoa harvests in producing countries, caused by drought, heavy rains, and plant diseases. Prices for popular Christmas items like chocolate figures and advent calendars have risen significantly. For example, a chocolate Santa from Rausch has increased by 38%, now costing €9.50. Kinder Schokolade products have also become more expensive, with a 55g bar now priced at €1.69 — over 20% higher than last year.

The sharp price increase is driven by record cocoa prices, which exceeded €10,000 per ton in April 2024, though they have slightly declined since.

Despite rising costs, chocolate remains highly popular in Germany. Per capita consumption has grown from 9 kg in 2018 to 9.9 kg in 2023. Exclusive treats, such as “Dubai chocolate,” priced at around €15 per bar, are particularly in demand.
