Trump nominates radical anti-deep state ally Kash Patel to new FBI director

Donald Trump has nominated his close ally, Kash Patel, to be the new FBI Director, marking a significant shift in the agency’s leadership.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump lauded Patel as a “brilliant lawyer” and staunch advocate for “America First,” praising him for his pivotal role in exposing the “Russia Hoax.”

Patel’s nomination signals a break from current FBI leadership, as acting director Christopher Wray would need to resign for Patel to assume the role. Senate confirmation is required for the appointment.

Patel, 44, started as a defense lawyer in Florida and later worked as a federal attorney in the National Security Division of the Justice Department, where he prosecuted members of Al Qaeda and ISIS. He gained prominence as a key figure in the Trump administration, particularly for leading investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election as part of the House Intelligence Committee.

Known for his criticism of intelligence and security agencies, Patel’s 2023 book Government Gangsters criticized the “permanent bureaucracy” and its role in hindering Trump’s reforms. He has called for sweeping changes at the FBI, even suggesting the Hoover building be turned into a “Museum of the Deep State.”

In his new role, Patel will work alongside Pam Bondi, Trump’s future Justice Secretary, to overhaul the FBI. Trump has emphasized that Patel’s mission will include tackling rising crime, criminal migrant gangs, and human and drug trafficking at the border.
