A significant disruption occurred when an internet cable between Sweden and Finland was damaged. The company GlobalConnect is actively working to repair the cable, which was found to have broken on land in Finland.
Local media outlets report that police believe the break may have been caused by malicious intent. GlobalConnect has clarified in a statement, as cited by the broadcaster, that this issue is unrelated to undersea cables.
Transport and Communications Minister Lulu Ranne confirmed that authorities are collaborating with GlobalConnect to investigate the incident, stating, “We take the situation seriously.”
This incident comes on the heels of November’s reports about separate cable damage involving the Finnish company Cinia’s undersea cable connecting Finland and Germany, as well as damage to a cable between Lithuania and Sweden in the Baltic Sea.
