French President Emmanuel Macron is conducting a series of meetings at the Élysée Palace to select a new prime minister following the dismissal of Michel Barnier’s government after a vote of no confidence in the National Assembly.
In the morning, Macron met with Barnier, who formally submitted his resignation. Their discussion lasted over an hour. Later, the leaders of the two chambers of parliament arrived at the Élysée: Yaël Braun-Pivet, representing the National Assembly and Macron’s Renaissance party, and Gérard Larcher, president of the Senate and a member of the right-wing Republicans party.
In the evening, Macron is scheduled to have dinner with François Bayrou, leader of the Democratic Movement (MoDem) party, who is widely considered a strong contender for the prime ministerial position. According to sources, Macron began talks with potential candidates a week before Barnier’s resignation, anticipating a potential crisis.
At 8:00 PM local time, the president is expected to address the nation to outline his plans for the near future.
