More than half of French support vote of no confidence in government – poll

A majority of French citizens, more than half, have expressed support for the motion of no confidence against the government, according to a poll by RTL, conducted by Toluna Harris Interactive.

The survey reveals that 53% of respondents back the motion, with significant support from left-wing party supporters—78% from France Insoumise, 66% from the Socialist Party, and 61% from the Greens. Additionally, 74% of National Rally (far-right) supporters also favor the motion.

However, the poll also highlights widespread concerns about the consequences of the motion. A majority, 82%, are worried about the future of France, 81% are concerned about the country’s economy and political situation, and 80% are apprehensive about the rising budget deficit.

Furthermore, 64% of respondents support the resignation of French President Emmanuel Macron.

The poll was conducted on December 4th with a representative sample of 1,008 French citizens aged 18 and older, following the announcement of the motion of no confidence.

On Wednesday, the motion against Prime Minister Barnier, proposed by the left-wing party France Insoumise, was passed with the support of a majority of parliamentarians. A total of 331 lawmakers out of 577 voted in favor, forcing Barnier to step down and marking the first time a French government has been ousted through such a vote since 1962. The government lasted just 90 days, making it the shortest in the country’s history.
