The mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, announced that about 150,000 Ukrainian refugees remain in the city.
Trzaskowski stated that more than half of the Ukrainian refugees who came to Warsaw have now left the Polish capital. At the peak, 350,000 Ukrainians arrived in Warsaw, and currently, about 150,000 remain in the city. Over the past few years, more than two million Ukrainians have arrived in Poland, and Trzaskowski expects that some of them will stay in Warsaw long-term.
The mayor emphasized that the city must be prepared for the possibility that some Ukrainian refugees will settle permanently in the capital. In this context, a law was passed in Poland in May, requiring children of Ukrainian refugees to attend Polish schools. Parents who do not comply with this rule risk losing social benefits of 187 euros per child and may face fines of 23 euros for each child.
