In November, over 8,100 migrants landed in Italy by sea, a 42% increase from the 5,722 arrivals in October, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) statement on December 3.
The arrivals mainly originated from Libya, Tunisia, Turkey, and Algeria, with Libya accounting for about 76% of all sea arrivals. Approximately 75% of the newcomers reached Lampedusa, while other ports of entry included Pozzallo, Trapani, and several others along the Italian coast.
From January to October 2024, the primary countries of origin for migrants included Bangladesh (20%), Syria (18%), and Tunisia (12%). Notably, over 10,000 Syrians arrived in Italy during this period, with a significant increase following recent conflicts in Syria. Among them, 77% were men, while 11% were accompanied children, and 6% were unaccompanied minors.
The UNHCR is actively assisting at disembarkation points, working with Italian authorities and partners to support new arrivals and vulnerable individuals. The agency continues to urge states to improve resources for search and rescue operations and expand access to safe pathways for those seeking international protection.
