Belgian police found thousands of euros during a search of a former European commissioner’s home

Belgian police found thousands of euros in cash during a search of the residence of former European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.

Reynders was questioned as part of an investigation into money laundering, and his apartment was searched on Tuesday, just days after his term as European Commissioner ended.

It is alleged that Reynders, who was responsible for upholding the rule of law in the EU, had been laundering money through the Belgian national lottery for years. According to Belgian newspaper Le Soir, the amount found in his home was less than 10,000 euros.

In 2019, Reynders was already under investigation for corruption and money laundering but denied any wrongdoing, and the prosecution dropped the charges. During his five-year term as Commissioner, he had a certain form of diplomatic immunity.

A European Commission spokesperson confirmed that the Commission is aware of the investigation and will cooperate with Belgian authorities.
