On Friday, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the results of the first round of presidential elections held on December 1.
The court ruled to invalidate the entire electoral process conducted under Government Decree No. 756/2024 and mandated the government to set a new election date and develop a revised electoral schedule.
The decision followed an emergency meeting of the court prompted by numerous requests to annul the election results. The appeals cited declassified documents from the Supreme Council of National Defense, which suggested that the campaign of candidate Călin Georgescu was orchestrated from abroad.
Earlier this week, the court had validated the results of the first round, in which Georgescu, known for his anti-Western stance, achieved a surprising victory. Furthermore, voting for the second round had already commenced on Friday at overseas polling stations.
Georgescu had previously stated that, if elected, he would ban the transit of Ukrainian grain through Romania and cease military assistance to Ukraine.
