French far-left threatens socialists with breakup over willingness to cooperate with Macron

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the far-left party “La France Insoumise,” warned the socialists, with whom his party ran in the elections as part of the “New People’s Front” alliance, that their partnership could be severed.

The reason for this threat is the socialists’ readiness to cooperate with President Emmanuel Macron on the formation of a new government.

According to BFMTV, Mélenchon stated that if the socialists decide to work with Macron’s party, the “New People’s Front” would continue its activities without them.

Mélenchon reaffirmed his position that his party will not support the formation of any government unless it is a left-wing government formed by the forces that received the most votes in the parliamentary elections.

The leader of “La France Insoumise” expressed outrage that socialist leader Olivier Faure “caught him off guard” and put forward his candidacy for the position of prime minister, even though the socialists received less than 2% of the vote in the 2022 elections.

Earlier, the far-left refused to participate in consultations with President Macron regarding the nomination of a new prime minister. Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron is looking for a candidate for the new prime minister after Michel Barnier’s government was voted out of confidence, a first since 1962. Macron himself has stated that he has no intention of resigning.
