The incoming Lithuanian Minister of the Interior, Vladislavas Kondratovičius, has stated that there is no need to close the two remaining border crossings with Belarus.
Last year, Lithuania closed the “Shumskas” and “Tveriačius” crossings, and in March of this year, it shut down the “Lavoriškės” and “Raigardas” checkpoints. Currently, the open border crossings between Lithuania and Belarus are “Šalčininkai” and “Miedininkai.”
“I believe the border guards are doing their job, but it may be worth analyzing the situation and preparing for potential difficulties. We will discuss this with the leadership and assess the current situation. At present, I do not see a need to close the border crossings,” Kondratovičius said.
He also noted that closing these checkpoints is not feasible due to international commitments.
“It is important to understand that the remaining border crossings also serve international functions. Transit is not limited to Belarus or Russia but extends further,” the future minister added.
