Electrica, the largest energy company in Romania, has reported being the victim of a cyberattack.
The company stated that its specialists are currently working closely with national cybersecurity authorities to address the incident and mitigate its consequences. The source of the attack was not disclosed by the company.
It was also noted that the company’s critical systems were not affected. Electrica advised consumers to exercise caution regarding any suspicious messages received in its name and to avoid sharing personal information over unsecured channels.
Commenting on the attack, Romania’s Ministry of Energy stated that initial investigations revealed the use of ransomware software for the malicious activity.
“Specialists have retrieved digital artifacts obtained during the attack to identify its source. Authorities are collaborating closely with state agencies specializing in cybersecurity to investigate and counter the attack,” the ministry said.
The Electrica Group provides services to approximately four million users. The company owns and operates distribution networks and transformer substations in three major regions of Romania: Northern Transylvania, Southern Transylvania, and Northern Muntenia.
