The United States carried out a series of airstrikes on Islamic State (ISIS) targets in central Syria, conducting 75 precision strikes on December 8.
According to a statement from the command, the strikes targeted ISIS leaders, operatives, and training camps. The operation aimed to weaken ISIS activities, prevent the planning of external operations, and deny the group any opportunity to regain its foothold in the region.
General Michael Erik Kurilla emphasized that the US is determined to thwart any attempts by ISIS to exploit the current situation in Syria. He also warned that collaboration between other organizations and ISIS in the country would have serious consequences.
Meanwhile, Syrian rebels announced on December 8 that they had captured Damascus, effectively ending more than 20 years of Bashar al-Assad’s rule. Reports suggest that Assad is currently in Moscow.
