Italy suspends asylum applications from Syrian citizens

The Italian government has decided to follow the lead of several European nations by suspending asylum applications from Syrian citizens in the wake of President Bashar al-Assad’s fall.

This move comes just hours after other European countries made similar decisions. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office stated that Italy would “closely follow developments in the situation” and remain in constant contact with regional, European, and G7 partners. However, the government emphasized that despite the chaos in Syria, “the protection of civilians” remains the top priority.

Special focus was placed on the safety of Italian citizens and minorities, particularly Christians, who could face increased risks. In a rare move, Italy has decided to keep its diplomatic presence in Damascus, expressing deep gratitude for the efforts of its diplomatic staff.

While the EU scrambles to manage the fallout from Assad’s downfall, Italy seems to be holding onto its moral compass, though the decision to suspend asylum applications might raise questions about its humanitarian stance.
