Syria, following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, must avoid repeating the “horrific scenarios” of Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan, as well as prevent a new civil war and another refugee crisis.
This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, during her speech in the European Parliament.
The coming weeks will be crucial to understanding whether the situation is moving in the right direction. The rights of all Syrians, including those of numerous minority groups, must be protected. Special attention should be paid to preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, independence, sovereignty, and state institutions, Kallas emphasized.
She also noted that Brussels will judge the actions of the group “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham,” which has taken control in Damascus, “not by words, but by deeds.” The EU, along with the US and the UN, has designated this group as a terrorist organization.
The situation in Syria remains tense, and global leaders continue to voice their concerns about its further development.
