A violent stabbing in Berlin’s Zehlendorf district has left a 21-year-old Afghan man seriously injured and likely paraplegic, according to police.
On Tuesday, the victim was attacked in a park, suffering stab wounds to the back, thoracic spine, and face. Rescue workers rushed him to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
The suspected attacker, a 23-year-old Afghan, was apprehended later that evening at Berlin’s Ostbahnhof after turning himself in during a police investigation. Authorities have not established any connection between the victim and the suspect.
A spokesperson for the Berlin public prosecutor confirmed that the attacker is being investigated for serious bodily harm, though there are no indications of a motive for the crime.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear before an investigative judge soon, who will decide on the prosecutor’s request for an arrest warrant.
