The Austrian government has proposed a payment of 1000 euros to Syrian refugees who choose to return to Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced this on X. He stated that the country is ready to provide assistance of 1000 euros to Syrians who decide to return home.
Austria now needs its citizens for reconstruction. The asylum process for Syrian nationals will be suspended, Nehammer said.
After the fall of Assad’s regime last week by Islamist rebels, Austria, like many EU countries, suspended the consideration of asylum applications from Syrian refugees. However, they cannot be deported against their will until the situation in Syria becomes clearer. Syrians make up the largest group of asylum seekers in Austria.
It remains unclear how many Syrian refugees will take up the Austrian government’s offer, as 1000 euros is unlikely to cover the full cost of traveling home.
