The far-left party “Unsubmissive France” has announced its intention to initiate a vote of no confidence against newly appointed Prime Minister François Bayrou. This was stated by the party’s national coordinator, Manuel Bompard, on X.
Bompard called Bayrou’s appointment “another insult to democracy.” He pointed out that, after losing all the recent elections, Macron is appointing his first and last supporter to the government.
“Unsubmissive France” may initiate a vote of no confidence against the government under Article 49.2 of the Constitution, if it gains the support of at least 58 deputies. The party holds 71 seats in the National Assembly.
However, it is still unclear how other left-wing forces, such as the Socialist Party of France, will react, as they had previously shown more openness toward supporting the new government.
The position of the right-wing “National Rally,” which has the largest faction in the National Assembly, is also not yet fully determined, although it will certainly not participate in Bayrou’s government.
François Bayrou, 73, replaced Michel Barnier as Prime Minister, after Barnier’s government was dismissed following a record-short tenure of just 91 days. Bayrou was an ally of Macron in 2017, but in recent years, he has distanced himself, while maintaining influence within the president’s circle.
It is reported that Bayrou’s nomination has been positively received by most political forces in the National Assembly, including Marine Le Pen’s “National Rally.”
