Brussels forces Spain to hike diesel prices, hurting everyday drivers

Once again, the European Union is imposing its will on everyday motorists, this time pressuring Spain to hike diesel prices, potentially making it more expensive than petrol. This move could mark the end of decades of affordable diesel, burdening the working class and small businesses that rely on diesel-powered vehicles.

For years, Spain’s motorists enjoyed cheaper diesel fuel, with tax breaks making it the go-to option for families, small businesses, and transport operators. Diesel cars became a staple for many, encouraged by governments keen on supporting practical, affordable motoring. But now, Brussels is turning its attention to diesel, scapegoating it as an environmental villain and flexing its bureaucratic muscle to dictate national fuel policies.

In response to EU demands, Spain plans to raise diesel taxes by 11 cents per litre starting in early 2025, pushing prices to rival—or even surpass—those of petrol. This hike will hit those who rely on older diesel vehicles, such as working-class families and small businesses in transport, hardest.

While the EU justifies the move as part of its Green Deal, aiming to reduce emissions, critics argue this is another overreach from unelected officials out of touch with the struggles of ordinary people. Industries like transport and logistics, already under pressure from rising costs, will be squeezed even further, and average motorists—unable to afford electric alternatives—will feel the sting.

Brussels’ latest attack on affordable fuel and everyday transport reflects its growing ambition to control how people live, move, and spend. As Spain falls into line with the EU’s agenda, it’s the people who will be left paying the price.
