Denmark is investigating whether it is legal to check the views of citizenship applicants

In Denmark, authorities are investigating the legality of checking the views of citizenship applicants to determine whether they support anti-democratic ideas.

According to DR, after heated debates in parliament, the government decided to explore whether the idea of examining the views and values of citizenship applicants is in line with the law. The Ministry of Immigration and Integration announced this decision.

The issue arose after an interview conducted by the parliamentary citizenship committee with three applicants, where their stance on core democratic values was questioned, as their social media accounts contained posts contradicting these values.

The government plans to create a working group to investigate the legality of mandatory checks on applicants’ views, in terms of both national legislation and Denmark’s international obligations. The resources required for implementing such checks will also be assessed.

Minister for Immigration and Integration Kaare Dybvad Bek stated that there is a growing spread of totalitarian views among a minority of Muslims living in Denmark, views that are entirely unacceptable for the country, and the authorities must actively counteract this.

In Finland, there is currently a discussion about tightening the conditions for acquiring citizenship, while in Germany, citizenship rules were relaxed earlier this year.
