Italian authorities are increasingly focusing on crimes committed by illegal migrants, particularly sexual offenses targeting both young and older women. According to Il Giornale, about one in five illegal immigrants has committed a crime, with the initial offense being their unlawful entry into the country.
Since illegal immigration is a hidden phenomenon, the true figures could be even higher. The report also noted that crime data from the past two years links the rise in crime to the presence of illegal immigrants in Italy.
In a separate report, La Verità highlighted that while illegal migrants make up less than 1% of the population, they account for 9% of crimes. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that Europe needs to adopt a new approach to both legal and illegal migration to reduce crimes against women. Deputy PM Matteo Salvini echoed her sentiments, saying that recognizing the growing involvement of foreign aggressors is crucial in defending women.
Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi pointed out that 65% of crimes in Milan are committed by foreign nationals, underscoring that simply regularizing illegal migrants won’t solve the issue. Meloni, who aims for Italy to set a standard for handling illegal migration, has already received praise for her approach.
