French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a visit in the coming days to the overseas territory of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, which was severely impacted by a hurricane. He shared this news on X (Twitter).
Macron noted that during a meeting of the interministerial crisis task force, he assured that all emergency measures to assist the population of Mayotte had been taken.
“In the coming days, I will visit Mayotte to support our fellow citizens as well as the mobilized civil servants and emergency rescue services,” he stated.
Macron declared a national day of mourning for the victims of the disaster.
On Saturday, Cyclone Chido struck Mayotte, and it is being described as possibly the strongest hurricane in the last 90 years. Wind speeds reached up to 220 kilometers per hour.
Preliminary estimates suggest that the storm destroyed the homes of about one-third of the island’s 100,000 residents. The infrastructure has been severely damaged, with only a few communication towers surviving the devastation.
