U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has described Turkey as a key force in Syria’s future following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago estate, Trump commented on the recent developments in Syria, stating that he believes Turkey will play a crucial role in the country’s future.
“Nobody knows what will happen with Syria, but I think Turkey will be very important,” he said.
Trump also praised his relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, calling him “very smart” and commending Turkey’s military strength.
“Erdogan is a guy I get along with very well. He has built a very strong, powerful army, one that hasn’t been drained by war. He’s a very smart guy,” Trump added.
At the same time, Trump referred to Assad as a “butcher” and highlighted the numerous casualties resulting from his rule.
