Lamborghini has postponed the launch of its first fully electric model to 2029, a year later than originally planned. The Italian automaker stated that the luxury sports car market is not yet ready for full electrification.
CEO Stephan Winkelmann explained that the company doesn’t believe the market will be ready for a fully electric vehicle by 2025 or 2026.
In contrast, Ferrari, Lamborghini’s Italian competitor, is set to unveil its first electric model as soon as next year.
Lamborghini’s decision comes amid challenges facing European carmakers, including slowing sales and difficulties in transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs), alongside shifting regulatory standards. Winkelmann mentioned that Lamborghini is awaiting clearer EU regulations, particularly regarding the 2035 ban on new internal combustion engine vehicles, which will be reviewed in 2026.
Additionally, Lamborghini is monitoring discussions about synthetic fuels, viewing them as a potential opportunity for its cars. Winkelmann also confirmed that Lamborghini has no plans to spin off from the Volkswagen Group and that all Lamborghini cars will continue to be produced in Italy.
