Hungary seeks temporary suspension of sanctions against Gazprombank

Hungary has reached an agreement with the United States for a temporary suspension of sanctions against Gazprombank for three months.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced, according to the MTI news agency.

We managed to agree with the Americans that sanctions against Gazprombank will be suspended for three months, so the threat has been averted, Orbán stated.

In addition, Hungary has agreed with Russia on an alternative method for paying for gas supplies. The United States added Gazprombank and six of its foreign subsidiaries to the sanctions list on November 21. This bank is used by European countries and others that have imposed restrictions on Moscow to pay for Russian gas in rubles.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described these sanctions as an attempt to complicate gas supplies to Europe but emphasized that alternative payment methods would be found.
