President Petr Pavel still enjoys the support of more than half of Czechs, although trust in his position has been declining since the presidential elections.
According to a survey by the CVVM agency, which studies citizens’ trust in constitutional institutions, 51% of the population trusts him. Traditionally, mayors and municipal councils have shown the best results in surveys. The government enjoys the least trust, although its support has been growing over the past year.
“Most citizens (51%) trust the president, with 14% saying they ‘definitely trust’ him and 37% ‘rather trust’ him, while 46% of respondents expressed distrust, including 26% who ‘rather distrust’ him and 20% who ‘definitely distrust’ him. The remaining 3% of respondents could not make up their minds,” the authors of the study reported.
This is currently the worst result for Petr Pavel since he became head of state (on March 9, 2023). In spring, he was supported by 55% of respondents, and last year, from April to November, his trust level was at 58%.
The latest survey was conducted from September to November. During the same period, 23% of respondents expressed trust in the government. In the long term, support for the government is growing. Last year, it was at its lowest, with only 17% of the population supporting the cabinet. At the turn of 2022 and 2023, it was trusted by one-third of the population.
A similar trend is observed in the Chamber of Deputies, which is currently supported by 24%, compared to 18% a year ago and one-third two years ago.
The result for the Senate, which is 32%, is generally consistent with last year. Municipal councils and mayors showed no significant fluctuations. Councilors received 65% support, and mayors received 68%.
