The British Army has successfully tested its first radio-frequency directed-energy weapon (RFDEW), a technology capable of detecting, tracking, and targeting threats across land, air, and sea.
The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that the RFDEW can disable entire swarms of drones using radio waves. According to officials, this weapon can neutralize a swarm at a cost “lower than the price of a packet of meat pies.”
The RFDEW can detect, track, and destroy a variety of threats, with the ability to neutralize targets up to 1 kilometer away almost instantly. The cost per shot is estimated to be just 10 pence, making it a highly economical alternative to traditional missile-based air defense systems.
Unlike laser-directed energy weapons such as the DragonFire system, the RFDEW uses high-frequency radio waves instead of a laser beam to disable enemy targets. By damaging critical electronic components inside devices like drones, the RFDEW can cause them to become immobilized or fall from the sky.
This successful test marks a significant step forward in directed-energy weaponry for the British military.
