Italy extends military aid to Ukraine with government’s support

The Italian government has agreed to extend military aid to Ukraine, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s administration approving the continuation of support on Monday.

The government passed a decree outlining “urgent provisions for extending the authorization to transfer military vehicles, materials, and equipment to Ukrainian government agencies.”

This decision follows the initial commitment made by Italy’s previous government under Prime Minister Mario Draghi. After Meloni took office in the fall of 2022, her Cabinet extended the authorization for 2023 and now for 2024.

To send weapons to Ukraine, Meloni’s government requires parliamentary approval. The current authorization for military aid is valid until the end of 2024.
