Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on social network X that he had offered Slovakia financial compensation in exchange for rejecting Russian gas.
According to Zelensky, the proposal involved compensating Slovakia for losses from Russian gas transit and providing alternative fuel supplies at the request of the European Commission.
He expressed surprise at Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s refusal to accept the offered funds. Previously, Fico claimed that Zelensky had proposed €500 million from frozen Russian assets in return for supporting Ukraine’s NATO membership.
Fico, known for his stance against Ukraine joining the North Atlantic Alliance, emphasized that he would not change his position as long as he remains prime minister. Earlier in December, a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels also failed to reach unanimous support for Ukraine.
