Investigators have focused on the failure of the authorities to ensure proper security at the Christmas market.
It was revealed that the road the attacker used to approach the market should have been blocked by a police van, acting as a mobile barrier. However, it was precisely at this location that the terrorist began running over people.
The prosecution and the Jena Institute of Forensic Science have filed charges of aiding and abetting the murder of five people and causing bodily harm to several hundred others. Dieter Siegel, a member of the institute’s board, told BILD that the police and the administration “did not organize or establish the necessary technical barriers.”
Lawyer Adam Ahmed also criticized the authorities’ actions:
If it is true that the road was supposed to be guarded by a police vehicle but this did not happen, it clearly indicates the need for preventive security measures, and at the same time, demonstrates a serious oversight. The prosecution should immediately begin an investigation into involuntary manslaughter and bodily harm. The responsible police officers must be held criminally accountable.
