President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier has made a historic decision to dissolve the Bundestag and call for new elections to the national parliament, which will be held on February 23, 2025.
This decision follows the results of a vote of confidence in the government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who heads the so-called “traffic light” coalition (consisting of the Social Democratic Party, the Free Democratic Party, and the Greens).
During the vote, a majority of parliament members voted for a motion of no confidence in Scholz’s government, leading to a political crisis and the need for the dissolution of parliament. The decision to dissolve the Bundestag and call for elections was announced by Steinmeier himself.
