Olaf Scholz’s chances of being re-elected German chancellor are plummeting rapidly

In Germany, preparations have begun for the upcoming Bundestag elections, which will take place on February 23, 2025.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has dissolved the current parliament, stating that in difficult times, the country needs “an effective government and stability in parliament.”

The main candidates for the post of chancellor are the current head of government, Olaf Scholz (SPD), and the leader of the opposition, Friedrich Merz (CDU). However, according to recent polls, Scholz’s support is rapidly decreasing. His party, the SPD, is only gaining 14-16%, while the CDU/CSU bloc is receiving 31-33%.

For comparison, before the 2021 elections, the gap between the parties was only 9.5%, and Scholz managed to close that gap and overtake his rivals. However, experts believe that repeating this success in the current circumstances is highly unlikely.

Analysts believe Scholz can only win if there are significant mistakes made by Merz or his party. Otherwise, it is highly probable that Scholz will lose the chancellorship to his opponent.
