Sweden is facing a critical shortage of burial spaces in the event of a military conflict.
In response, the country’s funeral services have begun actively searching for new plots of land to prepare for potential emergencies, according to The Associated Press.
The need for such measures stems from recommendations made by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, which has urged municipalities to ensure readiness for large-scale burials. This decision is driven by the deteriorating geopolitical situation in the Baltic region, following Sweden’s accession to NATO and escalating tensions with Russia.
In particular, the funeral association in the city of Gothenburg is already looking for a plot of about ten acres. This land is intended to accommodate up to 30,000 coffins in case of emergency. Such measures are considered an essential part of the country’s national civil defense strategy.
