Moscow says it thwarted plot to kill russian military officer and war blogger

Authorities in Moscow announced Saturday they had foiled a plan to assassinate a senior Russian military officer and a pro-war blogger using a homemade bomb hidden in a portable speaker.

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the modern successor to the KGB, claimed the scheme was orchestrated by Ukraine.

The FSB revealed that a Russian citizen, now in custody, allegedly acted under the direction of a Ukrainian Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) officer, who went by the name “Andrey” on Telegram. According to the agency, the suspect retrieved the bomb, disguised as a portable music speaker packed with 1.5 kilograms of TNT, from a hiding spot in Moscow.

While the FSB didn’t reveal the identities of the intended targets, the news broke just ten days after Ukraine carried out a high-profile assassination in Moscow, eliminating the commander of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical forces.

This isn’t Ukraine’s first bold operation. Back in October, Andriy Korotkyy, a security chief at the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, was killed in a car bombing. At the time, GUR took full credit, branding Korotkyy “a war criminal.”

Interestingly, Kyiv hasn’t claimed responsibility for this latest alleged plot, leaving speculation swirling. Still, the revelation underscores the escalating shadow war between the two nations, fought as much in covert operations as on the battlefield.
