Portugal’s Judicial Police (PJ) have seized approximately 3.5 tons of cocaine over the past few days. The drugs arrived in the country hidden in boxes of bananas and were believed to be intended for distribution across several European countries.
According to PJ, the seized drugs, weighing a total of 3.458 tons, were concealed in boxes of bananas packed onto several pallets and transported in the holds of a cargo ship that regularly carries fruit between Latin America and Europe.
“Given the large number of pallets of bananas being transported on the ship, the detection of the drugs was only possible thanks to the extensive and meticulous work carried out by the investigators of this police force,” the judicial authorities stated on Monday.
The operation, named Acácias, was conducted with the assistance and support of the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency.
