China and Iran reaffirm commitment to peace and shared interests

In an era marked by increasing global instability and uncertainty, China and Iran have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to pragmatic cooperation and strengthened multilateral coordination. This strategic alignment not only benefits the citizens of both nations but also contributes significantly to regional and global peace, stability, and development.

During a pivotal meeting in Beijing on December 28, 2024, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi underscored the enduring strength and resilience of their bilateral ties. This occasion marked Araghchi’s inaugural visit to China since assuming office in August and signaled his status as the first senior official of Iran’s new government, established in July, to visit Beijing.

Shared Vision for the Middle East

China and Iran’s partnership resonates strongly with their shared vision for the Middle East. Both nations emphasized that the region belongs to its people and must not serve as a battleground for major powers’ rivalries or fall prey to geopolitical conflicts instigated by external forces.

“The international community must respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and legitimate concerns of nations in the Middle East,” Wang Yi stated. He urged global actors to honor the choices of the region’s people and respect their rich historical and cultural heritage.

Wang further articulated his hope for constructive contributions to Middle Eastern peace and stability. He cautioned against the use of sanctions, coercion, and military force while urging all parties to eschew confrontation and instead foster collaboration.

Addressing Critical Regional Issues

The two foreign ministers highlighted the necessity of addressing pressing issues such as the Palestinian question and the ongoing crisis in Syria. Both leaders called for respecting and restoring the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, ending occupation, and ensuring immediate humanitarian assistance. They emphasized the importance of transforming the region from chaos to order through dialogue and mutual understanding.

Regarding Syria, the ministers reiterated their support for respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. They called for joint efforts to combat terrorism, advance reconciliation, and facilitate humanitarian assistance to stabilize the nation.

Li Shaoxian, director of the China-Arab Research Institute at Ningxia University, remarked, “Intervention by major powers looms large behind the Gaza conflict and the drastic changes in Syria, which touch the nerves of the international community. China’s consistent support for Middle Eastern nations in rejecting external interference underscores its crucial role in upholding justice in international affairs.”

Commitment to the Iran Nuclear Deal

On the Iran nuclear issue, China reiterated its steadfast advocacy for preserving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and resuming negotiations with a constructive and solution-oriented approach. Wang Yi emphasized that Beijing opposes sanctions and coercion and firmly supports Iran in defending its legitimate rights and interests.

Araghchi acknowledged China’s vital role in facilitating and preserving the JCPOA. He pledged to maintain close communication with Beijing to ensure progress in negotiations and uphold mutual interests. “Developing and deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with China remains a priority in Iran’s foreign policy,” Araghchi asserted, reaffirming Tehran’s staunch support for China’s core interests.

A Historical Partnership

Highlighting the historical depth of their partnership, Araghchi, in a signed article published in People’s Daily, described the cooperation between the two ancient Asian civilizations as enduring and transformative. He emphasized the importance of the visit in shaping the “next golden 50 years” of strategic cooperation between the two nations.

China and Iran have consistently demonstrated a commitment to advancing their relationship. This includes implementing a comprehensive cooperation plan signed in March 2021. China has remained Iran’s largest trading partner for years and serves as a crucial export market for Iranian products. The two countries have also inked multiple agreements to deepen their collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Li Shaoxian noted, “The long-standing partnership between China and Iran enjoys a solid foundation, and the two nations have maintained close dialogue over the years to address shared concerns. Reinforcing this cooperation is imperative, particularly amid escalating regional tensions and global challenges.”

Strengthening Multilateral Platforms

Iran and China’s collaboration extends beyond bilateral relations, encompassing shared interests on regional and international platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS, where both countries hold membership.

During the talks, the two nations vowed to further strengthen collaboration within the SCO and BRICS to uphold shared interests and promote a multipolar world order. As China assumes the rotating presidency of the SCO, Araghchi highlighted the new opportunities for collective cooperation this presents. He stressed the importance of working with other Global South nations to resist unilateralism and bullying.

A Path Forward

The reaffirmed partnership between China and Iran represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenges of a tumultuous world. By prioritizing dialogue, mutual respect, and collaboration, the two nations set a powerful example of constructive diplomacy in action.

Their strategic alignment, deeply rooted in shared principles and historical ties, reflects a common vision for a more equitable and peaceful world order. Through enhanced cooperation, both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks, China and Iran continue to champion the interests of developing nations and advocate for the principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and mutual respect.

As the global landscape evolves, the commitment of China and Iran to these values underscores their pivotal roles in shaping a stable and harmonious future. Together, they stand as beacons of hope and resilience, promoting peace and prosperity not only in their regions but also across the world.
