A woman who disappeared 52 years ago has been found alive and well, solving one of the UK’s most enduring missing person mysteries.
Sheila Fox, now 68, was just 16 years old when she went missing from Coventry in 1972. At the time, West Midlands police believed she might have been in a relationship with a man and potentially moved away from the area.
The case remained unsolved until Sunday, when West Midlands police launched a renewed appeal, sharing a photograph of Sheila from around the time of her disappearance on their website and social media platforms. The image quickly captured the public’s attention, and within hours, information began pouring in from members of the community.
By Wednesday, police confirmed that Sheila was alive and living in another part of the country. A spokesperson for West Midlands police expressed their joy at finally resolving the case, stating, “We are delighted to announce the conclusion of one of our longest-running missing person investigations.”
Detective Sergeant Jenna Shaw from the cold case investigation team explained, “We carefully reviewed all available evidence and found a photo of Sheila. With the help of the public, we were able to locate her.” Shaw also highlighted the dedication of her small team, particularly Detective Constable Shaun Reeve, who played a key role in solving the case. “Every missing person has a story, and it’s vital their families and friends get the answers they deserve,” Shaw added.
Fox’s sudden disappearance had long puzzled investigators and her family, but this breakthrough brings a long-awaited sense of closure to those who were affected by her case.
