Since Germany’s Self-Determination Act took effect on November 1, around 100 people have applied each day to legally change their gender.
This new legislation allows individuals to alter their gender recognition without requiring medical approval or supervision. According to data released by Bild on January 2, between November 1 and December 10, 4,361 people, or roughly 110 a day, applied for gender changes. However, local authorities in Berlin and Münster couldn’t provide exact numbers. Still, it appears Berlin has had the most requests, with over 1,600 recorded.
Leipzig also saw a significant number of inquiries, with over 430 applicants. Authorities noted that many of the requests came from people in smaller towns, who preferred the anonymity offered by larger cities. The process costs as little as €35, but those seeking to change their gender again must wait at least 12 months before reapplying.
