Repair of damaged submarine communication cables has begun in the Gulf of Finland

Repair work has commenced in the Gulf of Finland to restore the submarine communication cable belonging to Elisa, which was damaged on December 25, 2024. This was reported by Elisa’s Head of Security, Jaakko Vallenius, via Yle.

The repair of the cables owned by Elisa and Citic Telecom is being carried out by the Finnish cable repair vessel Telepaatti, which specializes in submarine communication maintenance. Representatives of Citic Telecom stated that their cable will be repaired after the restoration of Elisa’s cable is complete.

Simultaneously, technical studies are ongoing to assess the restoration of the Estlink 2 power cable, which was also damaged on December 25. This was confirmed by Kimmo Nepola, the head of Finland’s energy company Fingrid.

It is worth noting that at the end of December, four submarine communication cables were reported damaged in the Baltic Sea.

On December 26, Finnish authorities detained the vessel Eagle S in connection with the severing of one of the cables. According to media reports, the ship was previously found to be carrying equipment that could have been used for spying on aircraft and ships.
