On January 2, 2025, the Romanian Mountain Rescue Service, Salvamont Romania, recorded a historic milestone, receiving a total of 161 emergency calls in a single day. This marked the highest number of requests for assistance in the organization’s history.
Rescue teams swiftly responded, involving over 530 rescuers in the operations. A total of 162 individuals in distress were assisted, with more than 100 requiring medical attention. Nearly 70 evacuees were transported to hospitals by ambulance.
The service underscored that these figures highlight the importance of proper planning and caution for those engaging in winter hiking or skiing activities. On New Year’s Day alone, nearly 100 individuals were rescued from the Romanian mountains, with more than 20 later requiring hospitalization.
