Germany’s Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, stated that the country might begin reassessing the status of Syrian refugees.
According to Faeser, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees will evaluate whether continued protection is necessary. Those who do not meet the residency requirements, such as not working or studying, may be required to return to their home country. However, she emphasized that well-integrated Syrians who have found employment and learned the language will be allowed to stay.
Faeser also highlighted the priority of swiftly deporting criminals and radicals, noting that Germany has expanded its legal capabilities for such actions.
Currently, around 975,000 Syrians reside in Germany, the majority of whom arrived after 2015. Over 300,000 have received temporary protection status.
The minister’s statements come amid election debates in Germany, where the issue of migration plays a significant role.
