Indonesia has officially joined the international organization BRICS, as announced by the government of Brazil.
The information was published on the official website of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The decision to admit Indonesia was made at the summit in Johannesburg in August 2023, based on a consensus among the bloc’s leaders. However, the country’s formal accession was preceded by presidential elections and the formation of a new government.
Earlier, on December 20, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira stated that BRICS is gradually approaching the significance of the G20 format.
BRICS was founded in 2006 by Russia, China, India, and Brazil, with South Africa joining in 2011. On January 1, 2024, the chairmanship of the bloc passed from Russia to Brazil. In 2023, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia also became members of the group.
