The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the state of Karnataka.
The disease was diagnosed in a three-month-old girl, who has been discharged after treatment, and an eight-month-old boy, who is still undergoing treatment. Both cases are associated with bronchopneumonia.
The virus is actively circulating worldwide, including in India, but no significant increase in acute respiratory disease cases has been recorded in the country. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and conduct drills to manage potential outbreaks.
Similar cases have been reported in China, where HMPV has become the second most common infection after influenza. Metapneumovirus causes respiratory symptoms ranging from mild to severe, including cough, fever, and pneumonia, and is transmitted through contact.
