Southeastern regions of the country have been experiencing intense snowfalls since Monday, which are expected to continue through Tuesday.
This may lead to difficulties on the roads, power outages, and disruptions in communication, reports NRK. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute initially issued a warning for heavy snowfall and strong winds until midday on Tuesday, January 7, but later extended it to 10:00 PM. In some areas, up to 50 centimeters of snow may fall within 24 hours.
In the first hours of the storm, approximately 5,000 households in southern Norway lost power. Traffic jams have been reported on the roads due to stranded trucks. Authorities have stated that all available road-clearing equipment is already in operation.
Due to adverse weather conditions, ferry operators are canceling trips or adjusting schedules, and airlines are delaying or canceling certain flights. In some municipalities, schools have switched to remote learning.
The Norwegian Communications Authority has urged residents in areas under storm warnings to prepare for potential communication outages. They recommend charging mobile devices and electric vehicles, having a battery-powered radio on hand, and using SIM cards from different operators to ensure access to communication in case of network failures.
